When your stomach is growling for lunch, doesn’t tavern food call out your name?

Yeah, same for us. We make a point to stop in here for lunch even when we don’t have to be here. Know why? Because we just really like the food.

Always have. In fact it’s one of the reasons Pat and I invested in the place.

Tavern food is unpretentious. Hearty. And you can usually grab a sandwich with both hands and take it directly into your mouth. Instant satisfaction.

With that in mind, Pat and I have our mid-day favorites. (Which, come to think about it, every one of our regulars does, too.) Here’s what we’re eating, and why these two tavern favorites have been on the menu for years, and are pretty hard to beat:

Double Barringer Bar Burger

Two hand-pressed (not just taken out of some frozen package) patties, cooked the way you like it, then run through the garden with shredded lettuce, tomato, and a fresh red onion for a little zing. It comes with mayo and a pickle, but I prefer mine with a slice or two of bacon on top for $1 more. Oh, you’ll need a napkin for this one, which is why it comes with 2.

Hoosier Sandwich

In Indiana, a sandwich with this name can only be one thing: Pork tenderloin, hand-cut, and made to order. Breaded or grilled. I like mine breaded and deep fried. Some folks tell me it’s also great grilled (unbelievable! I know.) Either way the (local) pork is “dressed as you like it.” The bun is perfect (we know a guy) so that it keeps up with the eatin’ – no matter what toppings you add.

When we’re feeling like melted cheese is the only thing that’ll satisfy, we order a pie at Last Chance Pizza in the back of our building. Last Chance has special pizza ovens and a mouthwatering menu. Pat and I differ on our favorites; He likes The 1879 because of its pork sausage, pepperoni, black olives, onion, and get this: zucchini! (Don’t knock it til you try it). I gotta say I prefer the Last Chance Pie, with its pork sausage, pepperoni, onion, mushrooms and green pepper.

There you have it. Our favorites, and why we like ‘em.
